Canvas 1839 Review

Be well. Do good. Sounds simple enough for Canvas 1839, the hip Austin brand that prides themselves on offering ‘CBD as uncompromising as you.’ We admit, we like their vibe. They speak a lot to the seemingly inescapable craziness of modern life and CBD as the natural antidote to make things a little better. The brand is off to a good start, but we’d like to see Canvas 1839 publish contaminants results online and ditch their ‘all-natural’ claims.

Canvas 1839 harnesses the eclectic Austin vibe in their branding focused on clean ingredients and impeccable sourcing. Their CSO Dr. Kyle Hammerick has some pretty impressive credentials with over 15 years of experience in pharmaceutical development, specializing in drug delivery systems. Dr. Hammerick’s expertise is partly what informs the brand’s tagline…

“Compromise-free CBD, steeped in science.”

Canvas 1839 currently offers just two CBD products: a full-spectrum CBD oil tincture and a relief cream made with CBD isolate. The first will set you back $50 for 300 mg and includes full-spectrum cannabidiol, MCT oil, sunflower lecithin, and stevia. Ipso facto, it’s healthy and actually tastes good.

The $65 CBD cream offered by Canvas 1839 irks us a bit. Yes, it has synthetic ingredients, but that’s not why we’re peeved.

We’re peeved because Canvas 1839 blatantly states on their homepage that they use ‘all-natural ingredients,’ but their cream contains propylene glycol, PEG-100 stearate, dimethicone, phenoxyethanol, and octyldodecanol.

They even continue to grandstand about their ingredient choices elsewhere on their site:
“We insist on organically farmed, all-natural ingredients without any chemicals, fillers, or artificial colors or flavors. No parabens, phthalates, or other known toxins.”

While one could argue the synthetics we listed above are not categorically toxins — like the totally harmless octyldodecanol — they’re certainly not natural. We won’t go too hard on brands that use them, provided they’re not making all-natural claims like in this instance.

At the end of the day, these ingredients are not deal-breakers. It’s the all-natural claim that needs to go.

Botanacor conducts the tests for Canvas 1839’s CBD oil products, but cannabinoid profiles are the only results posted online. To qualify for the Safety Badge, we’ll need to see contaminants results as well.

Canvas 1839 seems to have a solid direction, and we love their copy that speaks of intention and balance. They’re also genuinely committed to charity through their support of Ubuntu Life, SafeHaven, and more. Just a few tweaks should get them a higher rating.

Bottom Line – Canvas 1839 has great branding, but posting their contaminants results for their CBD products will help them go further.
